The CPI records with sadness the death of Noel Harris, lifelong trade unionist and communist, at his home in Donaghadee, Co. Down. As a union activist and official in Belfast, Dublin and London he was a member of DATA, the Draughtsmens’ Union, then national secretary of ASTMS in Dublin and a member of the Executive Council of the ICTU. He moved to Prague as head of the Social and Economic Department of the World Federation of Trade Unions and then to London as national organiser of the cinema workers’ union, ACTT.
Throughout his working life he campaigned against sectarian discrimination through his union and his membership of Belfast Trades Council and the Communist Party. In January 1967 he was a member of the founding committee of the Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association and took part in the first civil rights marches.
