CPI on the death of a great anti-imperialist

The Communist Party of Ireland expresses its condolences and solidarity with the family of Commandante Hugo Chavez, with the people and the Government of Venezuela.

Hugo Chavez has left an indelible mark on the history of the Venezuelan people and of Latin America.  Through his policies of wealth redistribution in the interests of the poor and working class he has transformed the lives of millions of people.

The Bolovarian Revolution has inspired millions of Latin Americans greatly contributing to the changes now underway across that continent breaking the myth of TINA (There Is No Alternative) so cleverly woven by western imperial interests and their domestic allies in the region.

His policies ensured that millions gained access to health and education for the first time and made food available and affordable to the masses.  He did indeed make poverty history for many.  He engaged in land reform that benefited hundreds of thousands of camposinas.

His contribution was to once again put socialism back on the agenda with renewed vigour as the only real alternative to the bankrupt and moribund system of capitalism that is inflicting such great hardship on working people across the world.

His revolution not only touched the lives of the Venezuelan people but also the poor of the USA whom the nationalised Venezuelan oil company distributed free fuel for a decade or more doing more for them than either Clinton or Obama regimes.

We dip our banners to pay homage to a great anti-imperialist and internationalist but raise them that the struggle against imperialism and for socialism continues.
