Death of General Vo Nguyen Giap
Communist Party of Ireland
The Communist Party of Ireland offers its condolences to the
people of Viet Nam on the death of one of their greats sons, General Vo Nguyen Giap,
at the age of 102. We also extend our deepest sympathy to his family.
A true son of the people, Vo was a humble and honest
communist and staunch anti-imperialist. He dedicated his life to the struggle
of the Vietnamese people to liberate themselves from the yoke of Japanese
occupation, French colonial rule, and occupation by US imperialism. Together
with Ho Chi Minh he masterminded the stunning defeat of the French imperial
forces at Dien Bien Phu in 1954, effectually ending French colonial rule in the
region.
He went on to lead the Vietnamese people in their long
struggle against US imperialism and its allies and was the mastermind behind
the Tet offensive against American forces in 1968, when the Vietnamese
liberation forces attacked more than forty provincial capitals and entered
Saigon, then the capital city of South Viet Nam, briefly capturing the US
embassy, one of the turning-points in the war of liberation. He lead the
liberation forces in the final defeat of USA imperialism and the total liberation
of Vietnam on the 30th April 1975.
At the age of fourteen Vo joined a clandestine resistance
movement, and by 1938 he was a member of the Indochinese Communist Party. He
went to China with Ho Chi Minh before the Japanese invasion of Viet Nam and
returned to wage guerrilla war against the occupying Japanese.
Vo and his family paid a heavy price for their commitment
to the freedom of the Vietnamese people. His first wife was arrested and died
in a French prison.
Irish communists salute this great anti-imperialist
warrior and communist, hero of the Vietnamese people and an inspiration to all
oppressed peoples. We dip our banner in salute.
